Former Angolan president Jose Eduardo dos Santos died on Friday morning at the age of 79 in Barcelona in the clinic where he had been hospitalised since a heart attack on 23 June, the government announced on its Facebook page.
“The Angolan government reports with great sorrow and consternation the death”.
Message from the Angolan government
The Angolan government said that the death of the 38-year leader had occurred late this morning.
The Angolan executive “bows down, with the greatest respect and consideration” to this historic figure who, according to him, presided “for many years with clarity and humanism [over the destiny] of the Angolan nation, at very difficult times”, the statement added.
A five-day national mourning period was declared from Saturday to honour his memory.
